Volunteer Teaching Siam Safari Children’s Project

‘Imagine being given the opportunityto makea meaningful contribution to education in a rural community.’

Your opportunity

Thailand has long been a popular tourist destination for people from all around the world, however not all Thai people benefit from the tourists financial input.  For Thai people speaking English is now a route to better jobs and future prospects.  By volunteering as an English Teacher in Rural Thailand, you will be giving Thai people an opportunity to improve their own future.

We are looking for keen and enthusiastic English speaking people to stay with us here in the Khao Sok jungle, for more information on Khao Sok visit www.khaosok.com .  There are three schools in this rural area, to find out more information on these schools follow the link http://www.siamsafari.com/childrens_project.php .  The teachers are good at teaching the grammar and structure of the English language but when it comes to speaking, many lack the correct pronunciation and confidence, having been taught by non English-speakers themselves. As a volunteer teacher, you will help fill this gap by focussing on developing the confidence of students who are nervous about making mistakes when talking in public.

Having Fun

‘Sanook’ in Thai means fun and that is certainly what the children enjoy in the classroom, however students are hard working and respectful of teachers due to their Thai culture.  As a volunteer you will be required to make learning fun including activities such as singing, games and art classes to improve their English Language skills and confidence.  The children in the schools age range between 4 – 15 you would be working closely with the schools, not only teaching English but getting involved in all aspects of the school day.

  Once in Thailand

On arrival you will be sent on a one week intensive Thai Language course and spend either 8 or 12 weeks working in a rural school in Khao Sok.  Things are very basic in Khao Sok, you will have accommodation and meals will be provided, weekends and school holidays are free for you to see parts of Thailand, should you wish.  There are two main school holidays throughout the school year in Thailand, their end of year break between March and May and a shorter break in October; at present no teaching will be required during these times.

 Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older
  • A native or fluent English speaker
  • Able to produce a high standard of work
  • Able to have fun and be relaxed around children
  • Possess an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken.
